Homebirth

Families come to choose homebirth for a variety of reasons. For some it is a deeply held belief in the naturalness of birth – a choice made long before the pregnancy even occurred. For others it is a desire of a change – a chance to heal from a previous birth experience or to have the birth they have been told they cannot achieve in the hospital. Others still discover somewhere during their pregnancy a desire for a different kind of care – one that honors their unique desires and needs as a birthing family. However you have come to consider homebirth, I look forward to meeting with you and discussing your many options.

I provide comprehensive pregnancy care which includes complete prenatal checkups, advice on options for prenatal testing, nutritional counseling, suggestions for a healthy lifestyle, information on sibling preparation, childbirth preparation classes and specifics on preparing your home for birth. I am always available to my clients by phone, should any questions or concerns arise.

I will attend your labor as soon as you need me and will provide continuous physical and emotional support, or step back to provide you with your privacy, as you desire. I carefully monitor the progress of labor as well as the wellbeing of both mother and baby. I always endeavor to tailor my care to the needs of individual clients while doing my utmost to insure a safe and satisfying birth experience for the whole family. Every birth is attended by myself and a second fully trained midwife, who acts as my assistant. Complications are rare because of the excellent health status of my clients, but if there is a situation that begins to develop, it is addressed skillfully at home or transported to an area hospital as necessary. I will perform a newborn exam, and provide instructions on postpartum care for both you and your baby.

Care during the postpartum period is essential to a woman’s complete recovery, as well as her long-term health. I provide six home visits throughout the postpartum period, which include regular check-ups for the mother, breast feeding consultation, and well-baby care. The physical and emotional wellbeing of the entire family are addressed and attended to. I will continue to care for you for six to eight weeks after the birth. At that time, we complete the cycle of care with an office visit in which we discuss family planning and contraception, we have a final check-up of mother and baby and we reflect on the time we have spent together.
